Combating Covid-19 with Biosafety Cabinets


A Microbiological Safety Cabinet (BSC), is an enclosed, ventilated laboratory environment used for working safely with biological samples that are contaminated with (or potentially contaminated with) infectious agents, toxins, or cultures.

Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) have issued guidelines on safe handling of COVID-19 samples and among them, using a Class 2 Biological Safety Cabinet when the procedures involve release of toxins and droplets resulting from technics like pipetting and other laboratory techniques.There are several types of BSC, which may be distinguished by the level of biocontainment they offer to protect against.
