Biosafety containment levels 1, 2, or 3 provides Personnel, Product, and Environmental protection against harmful particles and agents through the use of Biological Safety Cabinets. Particularly, in the Biosafety Cabinet Class II, Type A2, 30% of the contaminated air from the work-area is discharged to the ambient environment after passing it through an exhaust HEPA filter, while the remaining 70% of the air is recycled again through a downflow HEPA filter. This filtered exhaust air can either be discharged into the laboratory directly or externally via a thimble system or a dedicated duct system. However, filtered exhaust air must be discharged into the atmosphere through a thimble system or via direct ducts if volatile chemicals are utilised within the Type A2 Biosafety Cabinet as a supplement to typical microbiological work.
