Fume Hood

Chemical Fume Hoods are an essential local exhaust system principally used when laboratory procedures involve working with chemical agents that emit dangerous fumes and vapors.

At Alpha Linear, we manufacture both ducted and ductless configurations of Fume Hoods which acts as a great exposure control measure against noxious chemical fumes and vapors. It meets acute challenges in laboratory research when working with toxic chemical compounds which are highly volatile, unstable, flammable and typically with a boiling point <120 degree celsius.

Both ducted and ductless fume hoods protect the analysts and other laboratory personnel from any accidental release of harmful chemical spills, vapor fumes etc., that may potentially cause burns, skin irritation, lung inflammation or any other respiratory harm.

Fume Hood for Laboratory
Intended Objectives of Ducted Fume Hoods
  • Directs all vapors and harmful emissions through a dedicated exhaust duct system, thereby preserving safe and sterile working conditions inside the laboratory.
  • A negative pressure is maintained inside the work chamber by drawing laboratory ambient air through the open front sash, thereby completely protecting the operator performing the procedures.
  • Adds to additional HVAC costs owing to “conditioned” laboratory air drawn away from the facility.
Intended Objectives of Ductless Fume Hoods
  • Acts as a standalone, local exhaust system.
  • Simple plug-and-play system with no additional ducting or auxiliary systems required for smooth operation
  • 100% of the contaminated air is passed through a series of carbon and/or HEPA filters at the exhaust before releasing the air back into the laboratory.
  • Simple and an inexpensive local exhaust system that protects not just the operator but also the laboratory surroundings.
  • Reduces the burden on the building HVAC costs since the conditioned air is released back into the laboratory after passing it through exhaust filters
Inner Liner Material
  • Phenolic resin (for general applications).
  • Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP).
  • Epoxy resin.
  • Polypropylene (the best material for most applications)
  • Square-corner stainless steel (for durability and heat resistance)
  • Coved-corner stainless steel (easier to decontaminate, for radiochemical and biohazard applications)
  • Cement board (for rough usage)
Control Panels

Most fume hoods are fitted with a mains-powered control panel. Typically, they perform one or more of the following functions:

  • Warn of low air flow
  • Warn of too large an opening at the front of the unit (a “high sash” alarm is caused by the sliding glass at the front of the unit being raised higher than is considered safe, due to the resulting air velocity drop)
  • Allow switching the exhaust fan on or off
  • Allow turning an internal light on or off

Specific extra functions can be added, for example, a switch to turn a water wash system on or off.

Valves
  • Water
  • Nitrogen
  • Vacuum
  • Gas
Electric receptacles
  • 5/15 amps Socket (Standard / Splash Proof)
  • 16 amps Switch
