Alpha Linear’s Class II Type A2 cabinet discharges 30% of work-zone air through an exhaust HEPA while recirculating 70% through a downflow HEPA. Filtered exhaust can be released to the lab or, when trace volatile chemicals are used, ducted out via a thimble system. The Type B2 variant discharges 100% of work-zone air through a series of exhaust HEPA filters to a dedicated duct with an independent exhaust fan and an automatic exhaust interlock — the internal downflow blower will not run unless exhaust flow is confirmed, creating an impenetrable air barrier for the operator. Where large volumes of radionuclides or volatile compounds are expected, a full Total Exhaust Cabinet (TEC) is specified.

Is a Type A2 or B2 biosafety cabinet better?
Neither is universally better — they solve different problems. Type A2 is better for general microbiology and cell culture because it is cheaper to install and run. Type B2 is better, and often mandatory, when you regularly handle volatile toxic chemicals or radionuclides, because it exhausts 100% of air outside.
Can a Type A2 biosafety cabinet be used with chemicals?
Only trace amounts of volatile chemicals, and only when the cabinet is ducted to the outside via a thimble or canopy connection. For anything more than minute quantities, a Type B2 total-exhaust cabinet is required.
Why is a Type B2 cabinet more expensive to run?
A Type B2 exhausts 100% of the work-zone air outdoors, which means your HVAC system must continuously condition replacement air. It also needs a dedicated duct, exhaust fan and interlock, raising both installation and energy costs.
Does a Type A2 cabinet need to be ducted?
