The one difference that matters: airflow direction

In a laminar air flow cabinet, a HEPA filter delivers a unidirectional stream of ultra-clean air across or down onto the work surface and out toward the user. That keeps the sample pristine — but it also pushes anything on the bench (including aerosols) straight at the operator. In a biosafety cabinet, room air is drawn inward through the front opening, forming an air curtain that captures aerosols before they escape; the sample is protected by a separate HEPA downflow, and everything is HEPA-filtered before exhaust.

LAF is perfectly correct — and more economical — when there is no biohazard and you only need to keep the product clean: preparing sterile media, plant tissue culture, assembling electronics, or filling non-hazardous solutions. Choose vertical flow for taller setups and better containment of the work zone, or horizontal flow for long, unobstructed sterile fields.
